How to play Lucky 9

Also called Lucky Nine
2–15 players

Ace through ten only. No jacks, queens or kings. Ace is one, a ten is nothing, and a hand is the last digit of its total: 7 and 8 is fifteen, which is five. Closest to nine wins.

A nine on your first two cards is a Lucky 9 and beats a nine that needed a third card. You may take one more card, once.

Counting a hand

Only the last digit counts, which is what makes the game quick to read. Two cards totalling fifteen is a five; totalling twenty is a nought. There is no busting — a bad hand is just a low one.

An ace is one and a ten counts nothing at all, which is why the ten is in the deck.

Against the house, or for the pot

In dealer mode everybody plays the house: beat the house hand and you are paid even money, lose and your bet goes, and a tie gives your bet back.

In pot mode everybody stakes into one pot and the best hand takes it, with a tie splitting it evenly. Nobody is banking, so nobody is carrying the table's risk.
